In September 2024, updated WHS regulations were introduced across Australia, that explicitly required mask‑fit testing as part of comprehensive respiratory protection.

This required mandatory fit testing for any person required to wear a tight-fitting respirator, under multiple nationally recognised standards and workplace health and safety regulations - AS/NZS 1715:2009 and AS/NZS ISO 16975:3:2023

Individuals who are required to wear tight-fitting respirators—such as disposable N95/P2 masks or reusable half-face and full-face respirators—must undergo a mask fit test.

This ensures the respirator forms an effective seal on the wearer’s face, providing the necessary protection against airborne contaminants

Loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) do not require fit testing because they do not rely on a tight facial seal to provide protection, as they use positive airflow to keep contaminants out.

In accordance with AS/NZS 1715:2009 and AS/NZS ISO 16975:3:2023, mask fit testing should be performed:

• Before first use of any tight-fitting respirator to confirm proper seal and suitability.
• Annually as part of ongoing compliance and safety programs.
• Whenever there is a change in:
  • Respirator brand, model, or size.
  • The wearer’s facial features (e.g., dental surgery, significant weight change, facial injuries).

These steps ensure the respirator continues to provide effective protection against airborne hazards.

To comply with AS/NZS 1715:2009 and AS/NZS ISO 16975-3:2023, you must follow the below conditions: 

• Clean-shaven:
  • No stubble, goatees, or beards, as facial hair compromises the respirator seal.
  • Fit tests will not be conducted if facial hair interferes with the sealing surface.
• If you cannot or choose not to shave:
  • Consider using a loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR), which does not require fit testing.
• Pre-test preparation
  • Avoid smoking, vaping, eating, or chewing mints for at least 30 minutes before the test.
  • Bring any other PPE you normally wear (e.g., eyewear, earmuffs, hard hats) to ensure compatibility with the respirator.
